On Monday the 9th of March the CM2 and CM1 Anglophone section students went to see a film at L’ermitage in Fontainebleau. The film was called “Whale rider”. It was about a girl named after a man that had sailed on the back of the whale to discover New Zealand he was called Païkea.
Her granddad was in need of a new leader for the tribe. His son was not able to fit in the demands of the leader so his son went away and came back a few years later and had a baby that two baby twins, one was a boy and the other one was a girl; both the boy and the mother died in birth! Only the girl was left, she was Païkea!!! The grandfather was not happy with that name, he shouted at her dad.
What I liked about the film? It was showing that girls have the same rights as boys, it was tilling you about the culture of New Zealand.

I think that this film was very good. It is about a girl called Pai, who has to prove to her grandfather Koro, that she is able to be the leader of the tribe. Her grandfather doesn’t want her to be the leader of the tribe because he thinks that it should be a man’s job.
The way that Pai proves to Koro is when he is testing the boys to see who could be the leader of the tribe, he throws his favorite necklace into the water to see who could find it, none of the boys come up with it. So Pai finds the necklace and gives it to him.
Then a few days later while Pai is having a show for her family, Koro finds loads of whales washed up on the shore. Everyone in the town tries to help them but nobody can. Then as everyone was walking away from the whales, Pai gets on top of the biggest one and gives it a little kick and it moves off the beach and into the water. At the end, Koro decides that it is okay for a girl to be the leader.

The message of this film is that a boy is not always better than a girl.
The girl named Paya wants to prove to her grand father that she is capable of being a whale rider.
My opinion: I thought it was a good message but the beginning was not for children.The story is about a child that wants to be a whale rider,but the tradition says it has to be a boy.
