Dear Mr. Tyson and class,
We are second graders at Colony Bend Elementary in Sugar Land, Texas. Sugar Land is a suburb of Houston, Texas. Some people think our town is made out of sugar, but it is not (although we are pretty sweet). Sugar Land got its name because of the Imperial Sugar Factory that was located in our area.
We have been studying the weather. What is the weather like where you live? Today we had to have “rainy day recess” because it is raining outside. We hope your weather is sunny. We have been doing the weather forecast each morning on the morning announcements for our school. We go to do the announcements two students at a time.
We have been researching hurricanes in order to write a non-fiction class book. We actually know a lot about hurricanes because we just had one. Its name was Hurricane Ike and it was scary in some ways, but cool in other ways. We missed one week of school because so many campuses were damaged or had no electricity. It was very sad for many people who lost their homes in Galveston, Texas (which is only about an hour away from Sugar Land). Luckily, here in Sugar Land, we mostly just lost electricity and many trees were knocked down.
Sincerely Ms. Davis’ class,
